Beer · History · Short entry
The first Plzeň pale lager
On 5 October 1842 Josef Groll brewed the first batch of golden lager at the burghers' new brewery in Plzeň, the beer that gave its name to pilsner.
5 October 1842 (first brew); 11 November 1842 (first presented)
The Bavarian brewer Josef Groll brewed a bottom-fermented lager from very pale malt at the Burghers' Brewery.
Why it mattered
It gave its name and model to the pilsner style of pale lager.
Two dates
The brewery dates Groll's first batch to 5 October 1842; the Oxford Companion to Beer dates its unveiling to the Martinmas fair on 11 November 1842. The beer was golden, "the first truly pale beer ever seen in central Europe", made possible by malt from an indirectly fired kiln. See pilsner.
